Eye on UP and Bihar, BJP goes all-out to woo Dalits with Ambedkar Jayanti bash

The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar on April 14 in a big way.

The BJP state unit will be seen making every attempt to present itself as close to the Dalits on the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, a senior party member was quoted by TOI.

The decision to mark Ambedkar’s birth anniversary has been taken at the national executive committee meet at Bengaluru on Saturday .

Confirming that the party will focus big time on Ambed kar, UP in-charge Om Mathur was quoted by TOI that the finer points of the programme would be finalized soon. “After April 14, programmes would be held throughout the year as it would be 125th anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. But programmes would certainly be focused towards welfare of the poor,“ he said. A sizeable number of Dalit voters had voted for BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. While BSP has resorted to wait-andwatch strategy since its drubbing in subsequent polls, the BJP think-tank sees it an opportunity to garner more Dalit votes along with wooing the other backward classes.

“BJP believes that Dr BR Ambedkar was not only a leader of Dalits but of the country,“ Union minister Prof Ramshanker Katheria was quoted in the report. He also added that the party this year will mark Dr Ambedkar’s birth anniversary and try to reach to people at booth and mandal level. The programmes would begin from April 13 itself, Katheria said. BJP also plans to reap political gains by focusing on yoga. For it, the party has chosen the International Yoga Day on June 21. At the behest of PM Narendra Modi, the UN General Assembly last year passed a resolution to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day .
